I’ve been on a vegan diet for more or less two years, but I never really followed the diet too strictly. Why? Because it didn’t resonate with me entirely. I felt like being vegan puts you in a category I wouldn’t wanna belong in. Of course I know that it’s the best and only way, not only for the animals and the planet, but for my body as well. And I am following the vegan movement that’s growing all over the world, but especially in the US. People like Rich Roll, Jeff Morgan and countless others are promoting this lifestyle successfully, there are more and more vegan restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, and even gyms popping up all around….
… and I am stuck. Due to my work (I’m in the military) I live in the middle of nowhere, roughly one hour from the next big city and all of this seems to be only accessible via the internet. In this clip, Nimai Delgado, a vegan bodybuilder from L.A., shows how he finds motivation – motivation for the day, motivation to follow his dreams – and it all seems so easy seeing him running through L.A. in the early morning hours.
But I am stuck. Yes, I can wake up an hour early as well and go for a run before heading to work, but it just doesn’t feel like I’m part of something.
Tho I wanna be part of it.
I want to change not only my body by sticking to a clean, whole foods, plant-based diet.
I want to change how others think about being vegan.
I want to be part of it.
I want to matter.
But how, if no one is listening?
But how, if no one cares?
But how, if I’m here and not elsewhere?
Recently I’ve been reading more about how beneficial a raw diet is to your body. Watching documentaries like RAW – The Documentary which accompanies the Australien couple Janette and Alan breaking a world record of running 366 consecutive marathons barefoot around Australia on an entirely raw diet after Janette was diagnosed with and overcame cancer, showed me that anything is possible with a raw diet.
I decided that a three day juice cleanse would be the ideal start to change my diet towards a more raw one. Even though I knew how difficult it’d be for me – I love eating and just being limited to a few homemade (green) juices a day plus herbal teas and water was pretty scary to think about – I wanted to give it a try. For this year I didn’t come up with any New Years resolutions because, well you know, they just don’t work… At least for most, including me.
However I felt that this year is going to bring some changes. There’s something forming in the back of my head – a feeling that I have to do something meaningful with my life, something that not only brings me real pleasure, but is for a greater benefit.
My parents just got back from Greece and since it’s their 30 year anniversary next week I wanted to make them something special; of course I couldn’t hold it back until then and so we had a slice of this fully raw strawberry shortcake. The recipe is from FullyRawKristina and simply watching her videos brings me pure joy – pure joy, I think that’s what she says in her videos all the time as well. This recipe is for a strawberry shortcake and since strawberry-season is slowly coming to an end there couldn’t be a better occasion for it to be made. Let me just say this much: You’ll need loads of dried fruits for the shortcake crust, it’s a pain in the … (well, you know what I mean) to process them all without a strong food processor (yes, I do have a Vitamix, but it won’t do this job), but as a result you’ll get an estimated 10pound of delicious shortcake!
The small wound on my heel from yesterday was looking better today and so I decided to go on a short run with Greta before lunch. It might not have been the smartest idea as the wound opened up again and it’ll take even longer to heal this time, but I got so enthusiastic after looking at trail runs to sign up for this fall that I couldn’t resist.
Well. To treat myself I made those delicious sweet treats.
The forecast was right, we didn’t have to wait long for the rain to come back. So after all the work was finished I grabbed my mom’s bicycle and dog Greta to go for a short ride. Initially I wanted to go running again – my new trail runners arrived – but I have an open wound on my kneel which makes walking very painful, not to mention running. Riding the bike was almost as fun – I prefer running over biking and that’s the one thing that’s stopping me from a triathlon 🙂 – and gentle on my feet.
When I’m with my parents I usually eat vegan because my mom is vegan and my dad likes it as well. Now they’re on vacation and I’m house-sitting. Along with the house, there is a very-well yielding veggie garden which makes eating vegan quite easy. I didn’t go running, just a quick ride with the bicycle and the dog Greta so my body wasn’t in need for a huge calorie intake. And this is what ended up on my plates:
