Last month I spent some time in Austria – for the first time I went to the Steiermark region for one week of whitewater kayaking (I’ll be sharing that trip with you next week or so). After six hard days in ice-cold water I continued west to finally participate in the Karwendelmarsch – a 52km run with 2400m elevation gain through the Karwendel region in Austria.
It’s Friday (well, now it’s Saturday, but yesterday it was Friday), I got off work around noon and finally the sun overcame the rain. What better setting to swing on my bike and go for a nice afternoon ride.
gotta improvise when you ain’t got no bike packs… definitely something I’ll invest in
After discovering new places nearby home on bike this Friday, I decided it was time for another bike tour, but this time going in the opposite direction. I always wanted to go to Eschede, but for some reason I always turned around before getting there. For today’s bike tour this was my goal so I followed a route southbound through the woods and heathland which I know pretty well. Unlike Friday, there were quite a few other bikers enjoying the sunshine.
Those rocks were placed like this during the last ice age.
I got off work at noon today and once I arrived at home the sun was shining – what better way to start the weekend after having a rather wet and cold summer thus far. When I got out of the car I saw my neighbor cleaning his bike; this must have been a sign, because my bike has been sitting in the shed all dusty and sandy for a few weeks already. But just cleaning without making it even dirtier before? No way!
The “Fassberg” – a stunning 94m (308ft) above sea level
I love to run. It’s that simple. But lately I’ve been losing some of my passion, running (especially the road runs with a running group) felt like a chore and more often I caught myself running my usual routes without mindfully experiencing the nature around me. Consequently, I haven’t been running as much as I should have to be well prepared for the 63km trailrun with 3000m elevation gain; the Salomon Zugspitz Ultratrail.
Last night it was finally dumping like somewhere in the mountains. I woke up to half a feet of fresh powder and more white stuff coming down from the sky, made it to work safely (not everybody did today!) and was lucky to get off before 11am already.
This was calling for an actual snowbiking tour, despite the 30k run last night that I still feel in my bones.
I failed. Again.
My last post is ages ago and I had no idea when and what to write about; overall I’ve been just drifting around. This has to change and it did! Strangely the change came with the colder weather.
After having a not so great summer, the last few weeks were really nice, sunny and still warm. Starting Monday, a heavy storm was making running difficult – at least those parts against the wind. Last night the wind finally stopped and weather changed. There was some light rain I woke up to this morning and the colder temperatures showed me once again that I’m actually a fan of the cold season. Continue reading
This week weather was a little better and it almost felt like spring; on Thursday I played basketball with a few friends in shorts and t-shirt – what a feeling! Friday, the temperatures went down again, I decided to walk to my coffee store instead of taking the car and I noticed that the parks are finally starting to turn green after what felt like an endless winter. I was even able to enjoy my coffee in front of the store and soak up the sun. These are the little moments that bring me joy!
I have to admit this city has some nice areas – view over a park in Kassel
For the last couple of days I felt pretty down. My stomach was really upset (which used to be a problem quite often in the past and caused by me stressing out about things) and the super grey, snowy-rainy, cold weather wasn’t helping neither. I’m not sure if my upset stomach was caused by me being sick of the depressing weather or if I actually ate something wrong.
Anyhow, I didn’t even feel like exercising – all I did was taking my bike out for a short 10mile ride after I installed a new, wider back tire. A nice change to my setting; I’ve been planning on doing some changes such as the new SRAM NX drivetrain, but since I wasn’t in the mood for biking at all I postponed it for some point in the future.
